Mapping Genealogy Locations on Pinterest

Note: as of 9 March 2016 Pinterest has removed this mapping feature.

Pinterest has an interesting mapping feature that is great for genealogy. I like to pin lots of information about a place on a board created for a specific location. Then I can map my pins to a Foursquare map.

If you are interested in creating this type of board here are the steps I use.

1.      Create board and toggle “Add a map?”  to “Yes.” If your board already exists just edit it and change “Add a map?” to “Yes.” This will enable a Foursquare map as the board background.

2.      If you haven’t already, add a pin for a location you are interested in. On your pin click on “Add a place” and type in the location. Select the place you want from the list and Pinterest will map your pin to that location on the Foursquare map.

3.      If you don’t see the location you want you can add it to Foursquare.

a.      Go to https://foursquare.com/add-place and signup for a free account or log in to your account.

b.      Type in a place name and its address. Using the map underneath zoom in, pan around as needed and use the satellite view if you want to find the exact place. Click on the place and a pin will be dropped on it. You can drag the pin if it needs to be adjusted.

c.      Select a category by typing in its general type. You can check what categories Foursquare has at https://developer.foursquare.com/categorytree. 

d.      Save your changes and in anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour or so Foursquare will have updated their files and the new place will be available on Pinterest to use.

4.      To change or remove your pin location from the map just edit the pin (pencil icon) and click on “Remove Place” and save your changes.

5.      If you decide you don’t want a map just edit your board and change “Add a map?” to “No.”

Michael Holland’s Barryroe Family Tree

First Generation

1. Michael Holland, the son of William Holland and Catherine “Kate” Sheehy, was born in Butlerstown, County Cork, Ireland, on 19 November 1902.[1] He grew up working on the family farm in Butlerstown and during the Civil War was a member of the Barryroe Company of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and later served in the Local Defense Force (LDF) in Cork City.[2] When he was 34 years old he married Mary Ellen Hayes in the Barryroe church, Our Lady, Star of the Sea, on 29 April 1937.[3] Michael secured a job with the Royal Liver Insurance Company in Cork City where he and Mary Ellen moved soon after their wedding.[4] Michael and Mary Ellen raised six children in Cork where Mary Ellen died 3 June 1990 and Michael died 13 November 1991.[5] They are both buried in St. Finbarr’s Cemetery on Glasheen Road in Cork.[6]

Second Generation

2. William Holland, the son of James Holland and Mary Sullivan/O’Sullivan, was born in Lissycrimeen and baptized in Barryroe, probably in the old Lislevane Church, on 19 October 1869.[7] William grew up working on the family farm in Lissycrimeen and on 26 February 1895 he married Kate Sheehy in the Barryroe Church, Our Lady, Star of the Sea.[8]

3. Catherine “Kate” Sheehy, the daughter of Patrick Sheehy and Mary Reardon/Riordan, was born in Butlerstown and baptized in Barryroe, probably in the Butlerstown Church, on 13 June 1864.[9] Kate had no brothers and according to family stories her marriage to William was a made match and he took over the Sheehy farm.

Kate died in Butlerstown on 11 January 1926, supposedly found dead in bed while William had the flu.[10]  She is buried in the Timoleague Abbey Cemetery as the Lislevane Cemetery was not open yet and does not have a headstone.[11] William died in Butlerstown on 5 September 1945 and was buried in the Lislevane Cemetery.[12] His headstone inscription reads “Liam O'h-Uallachain, Baile Buitleirligh, D'eag Mi Mean Fomhair 1945 in aois 75 bliana, Ar dheis lamh Dé go raibh a anam. [Liam O'Huallachain, of Butlerstown, Died September 1945 age 75 years, May his soul be on the right-hand side of God.].[13]

William and Kate (Sheehy) Holland had the following children, all born in Butlerstown:

       i.  James Holland, b. 1895; d. 7 October 1980; m. 1944 Mary Ellen McCarthy.[14]

      ii.  Patrick Holland, b. 1897; d. 1897.[15]

     iii.  Sean Holland, b. 14 June 1898; d. 14 December 1966; m. Dublin 1933 Cathy White.[16]

1   iv.  Michael Holland, b. 19 November 1902; d. Cork City 13 November 1991;
           m. Lislevane 29 April 1937 Mary Ellen Hayes.[17]

Third Generation

4. James Holland, the son of William Holland and Ellen Fleming/Flemming, was born in Lissycrimeen and baptized in Barryroe, probably in the old Lislevane Church, on 24 January 1828.[18] James grew up working on the family farm in Lissycrimeen and on 30 January 1869 he married Mary Sullivan in the Courtmacsherry Church.[19]

5. Mary Sullivan/O’Sullivan, the daughter of John Sullivan, was born about 1837.[20]

James died in Lissycrimeen between October and December 1914.[21] Mary died soon after in February 1915.[22] Her obituary said she was a “model wife and mother, of a kind and neighbourly disposition. She was an exemplary Catholic, and reared an intelligent family, much respected in the district. She died fortified with the rites of Holy Church, and surrounded with every loving care and attention.”[23] She was buried in the Timoleague Abbey Cemetery and James was probably also buried there but no headstone has been found.[24]

James and Mary (Sullivan/O’Sullivan) Holland had the following children:

2     i.  William Holland, b. Lissycrimeen; baptized 19 October 1869;
            d. Butlerstown 5 September 1945; m. 1895 Catherine “Kate” Sheehy.[25]

      ii.  John Holland, b. Lissycrimeen; baptized 14 June 1871; d. 1935; m. Ann Holland.[26]

     iii.  Denis Holland, baptized Barryroe Parish 24 Aug 1873.[27]

     iv.  Timothy Holland, b. 15 Mar 1876.[28]

      v.  Ellen Holland, b. about 1882; m. 1911 Patrick Lawton.[29]

6. Patrick Sheehy, the son of John Sheehy and Catherine Driscoll, was born in Lissycrimeen and baptized in Barryroe, probably in the old Lislevane Church, on 1 January 1830.[30] On 17 February 1863 he married Mary Riordan in one of the old Barryroe churches.[31]

7. Mary Riordan/Reardon, was born about 1836.[32]

Patrick died in 1915 and Mary in 1916.[33]

Patrick and Mary (Riordan) Sheehy had the following children:

3     i.  Kate Sheehy, b. Butlerstown; baptized 13 June 1864; d. Butlerstown 11 January 1926;
           m. Barryroe 26 February 1895 William Holland.[34]

      ii.  Ellen Sheehy, b. Butlerstown; baptized 14 January 1866.[35]

Fourth Generation

8. William Holland, was born before the Barryroe baptismal registers began in August 1804. He was born in Lissycrimeen and was a farmer.[36] On 1 February 1820 he married Ellen Fleming in one of the old Barryroe churches.[37]

9. Ellen Fleming/Flemming, may have been born about 1800.[38]

William died before 1864 and Ellen may have died in 1870.[39]

William and Ellen (Fleming) Holland had the following children:

       i.  William Holland, b. Butlerstown; baptized 6 March 1823.[40]

      ii.  John Holland, b. Lissycrimeen; baptized 14 Aug 1825;
            m. Barryroe 20 Jul 1859 Ellen Mahoney.[41]

4   iii.  James Holland, b. Lissycrimeen; baptized 24 Jan 1828; d. Lissycrimeen 1914;
            m. Courtmacsherry 30 Jan 1869 Mary Sullivan.[42]

     iv.  Pat Holland, b. Lissycrimeen; baptized 21 Nov 1830.[43]

      v.  Mary Holland, b. Lissycrimeen; baptized 29 Sep 1833.[44]

     vi.  Edmund Holland, baptized Barryroe 23 Apr 1837.[45]

    vii.  Timothy Holland, b. Lissycrimeen; baptized 5 Jan 184.[46]

10. John Sullivan of Barryroe married between 1817 and 1842. There are 5 possible marriages in Barryroe for a man named John Sullivan who had a daughter named Mary of the right age to marry James Holland in 1869. Further analysis is needed to determine the correct couple.

11. To be determined wife of John Sullivan. The 5 possible women are 1) Honora Hurly, 2) Ellen Hurly, 3) Catherine Lehane, 4) Mary Driscoll and 5) Norry Flynn.

John Sullivan had the following child:

5     i.  Mary Sullivan, b. about 1837; d. February 1915;
           m. Courtmacsherry 30 January 1869 James Holland .[47]

12. John Sheehy was probably born in Lissycrimeen where all his children were born. He probably was born before August 1804 unless he was 21 or younger when he married. The Barryroe baptism register begins in August 1804 and contains 2 baptisms in 1805, 1 in 1806 and 2 in 1807 for a child named John Sheehy. These John Sheehy men would be 21, 20 or 19, respectively, if they married in 1826 so it seems likely John was born before the baptism register began in August 1804. On 6 July 1826 John Sheehy married Catherine Driscoll in one of the old Barryroe churches.[48]

13. Catherine Driscoll probably was born before August 1804 unless she was 20 or younger when she married. The Barryroe baptism register begins in August 1804 and contains 1 baptism in 1806, 1 in 1807, 3 in 1808 (and more the following years) for a child named Catherine Driscoll. These Catherine Driscoll women would be 20, 19 or 18, respectively, if they married in 1826 so it seems likely Catherine was born before the baptism register began in August 1804.

John and Catherine (Driscoll) Sheehy had the following child:

       i.  Mary Sheehy, b. Lissycrimeen; baptized 27 May 1828.[49]

6    ii.  Patrick Sheehy, b. Lissycrimeen; baptized 1 Jan 1830; d. 1915;
           m. Barryroe 17 Feb 1863 Mary Riordan.[50]

     iii.  Eugene Sheehy, b. Lissycrimeen; baptized 4 Apr 1832.[51]

     iv.  Ellen Sheehy, b. Lissycrimeen; baptized 22 Jun 1834.[52]

      v.  John Sheehy, b. Lissycrimeen; baptized 10 Aug 1836.[53]

14. To be determined Riordan. There are 2 possible Barryroe men with the surname Riordan who fathered a child named Mary Riordan of the right age to marry Patrick Sheehy in 1863. Further analysis is needed to determine if it is John or William Riordan.

15. To be determined wife. Either Ellen Donovan who married John Riordan or Mary Hayes who married William Riordan.

The Riordans had the following child:

7     i.  Mary Riordan, b. about 1836; d. 1816; m. Barryroe 17 Feb 1863 Patrick Sheehy.[54]

An Ancestor's Life on Pinterest

Pinterest can be a great place to chronicle an ancestor’s life. Recently I've been researching my Great-Grandmother, Hannah (Behnke) Dauber, and decided to create a Pinterest board with a timeline of her life. I started with her birth in Rehberg, Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany, and included information about her parents and her family's immigration to America. Then I added her marriage to my Grandfather, Henry J. Dauber, in Cleveland, Ohio, and details about their children and their life in Cleveland. I ended with her untimely death at age 35. For many of the pins I uploaded family pictures. The rest were copies of records (after checking the terms of use), copyright free images or Creative Commons licensed photographs. I think it turned out great and love how visual it is.

Next I created a board for my Grandmother, Catherine Mary (Yeagle) Dauber. I did something different for her. Her lengthy obituary contained an amazing amount of organizations and events she was involved in during the course of her life. Using the obituary as a guide I chronicled almost all of them.

And for my husband’s Grandfather, Patrick John Kearney, I told the story of his life through pictures and words. There is a great family tale about how Patrick met his wife, Margaret Moroney, at a holy well in Castletown, County Limerick, Ireland. Using a variety of my own pictures and other found images I recreated his life.  The main focus is the story of Patrick and Margaret meeting.

Using Pinterest for Genealogy

Are you visually oriented? Then Pinterest can be a great way to organize genealogy information. If you are a beginner getting started on Pinterest is easy. Check out Amy Lynn Andrews’ Pinterest Basics and then setup an account. If you already use Pinterest she has other helpful information you might like too.

However, before you start pinning read about copyright issues. The Legal Genealogist, Judy G. Russell, has a great blog post on Copyright, terms of use and Pinterest and Sara F. Hawkins’ Avoiding Copyright Pitfalls on Pinterest is helpful too. If you are curious about using Ancestry.com images see Heather Wilkinson Rojo’s Pinterest, Ancestry and Copyrighted Images.

Once you have an account you can start creating boards. Valerie Elkins has a Top 12 Tips For Using Pinterest For Family History blog post that gives great advice. Tips 1 through 3 will get you started but remember your pins will show up in reverse order. That means your first pin will be at the bottom of your board and your latest pin at the top. You can move and rearrange your different pinboards on your home page. If the order of your pins matters either plan accordingly or read How to Rearrange Pins on Pinterest.
